Les Anis de Flavigny

Flavigny sur Ozerain, town of the famous aniseed sweets and the film Chocolat

Flavigny is an old fortified town and is about 30 minutes drive from Fermette in France. You can park the car outside the fortress and visit the town by walking.

Flavigny sur Ozerain has the predicate: Les plus Beaux Villages de France.
This is very true, as it is a very beautiful old walled town.
From the car park, you walk up the stairs and through the entrance gate.
You immediately feel as if you are far in the past.
On the left side there is the “abbey restaurant” and on the right side the famous anise factory.

Flavigny became even more famous after the film
Chocolat was recorded here

Film ChocolatThe film Chocolat is based on the book of the same name by Joanne Harris.
Two well-known actors are Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche.
The film was shot in Flavigny in 2000 and has attracted many visitors since.
You can recognize the front of the chocolate factory by the small plaque on the wall.

You can already smell the aniseed when you walk along the wall of the old abbey.
The aniseed sweets are sold in beautiful boxes.
In the shop you can taste the different flavours.
When you walk further, there is a small restaurant where you can drink coffee and have a snack.
If you walk a little further, you come to a part that has been converted into a museum.

Visit to the factory
It is possible to visit the factory. This is only possible in the morning. You must be present before 11 am.
No appointment is necessary. If you are with a group of more than 15 people, an appointment is necessary.
Go around the building, towards the crypt, in the courtyard.
Wait at the door until you are let in.

The beautifully illustrated oval tins are available in various flavours. There are also organic aniseed candies.
Since January 2018, the candies have been labelled ‘vegan’. This is a 100% plant-based candy.

Restaurant La Grange

On the small square near the church, there is an old barn which has been converted into a restaurant. It was founded in 1976 by two farmers’ wives (Madeleine and Marie-Jeanne). The idea behind it was to earn some extra money, but above all to be more appreciated as a woman working on a farm.

At present, about fifteen people are actively involved in the restaurant.
The products and meals offered are regional and often organic. Everyone has their own speciality. The menu is based on what the season has to offer.

There are several restaurants in Flavigny, but this one is a must. This restaurant is also on our list of favourite restaurants in Burgundy.

Outside on the square there are picnic tables where you can sit.
You have to go inside to get your food or drinks, there is no service outside. It is also possible to eat inside.
You take a tray and cutlery and walk along the window where everything is displayed.
The offer varies and if you are a bit late, it may be sold out. Of course, you can also just have a drink or a delicious piece of fresh cake.

Stroll through the streets of Flavigny.

Flavigny has narrow streets with beautiful views. It is a pleasure to walk around. If you look at the facades, you will see many houses with a decoration, a statue or a sign.

The monks of the abbey sing mass on weekdays at 11.10am (L’Abbaye Saint Joseph de Clairval) in the church on the square.

    The surroundings of Flavigny

When you leave Flavigny and head towards Veneray_Les Laumes, you will see on the other hill the vineyards of Domaine de Flavigny . You can visit this domaine and buy wine.
