The 10 best tips for your holiday in Burgundy

When you say Bourgogne, you immediately think of delicious food and Burgundy wines.
But there is more; beautiful nature reserves, picturesque towns, castles and museums.
We have listed 10 beautiful sights for you.

The Burgundy region merged with the Franche-Comté region in January 2016 and is now officially called Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
This region is divided into 8 departments.

  • Cote d’Or
  • Yonne
  • Nièvre
  • Saône-et-Loir

The top 4 departments are part of Burgundy, the 4 departments below are part of Franche-Comté.

  • Haute Saône
  • Territoire de Belfort
  • Doubs
  • Jura

The Burgundy Franche-Comté region covers a large area.
Quincerot is located in the north of the Côte d’Or and the tips are suitable for a day trip from Fermette en France.

Cities worth seeing in Burgundy

Dijon, the capital of Burgundy

Follow the owl’s route. You will pass all the sights in Dijon. If you go on Tuesday or Friday, there is a nice market. In the centre around the market halls are many restaurants. The Musée des beaux- Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) is definitely a must.

Beaune the wine capital of Burgundy

Beaune is located south of Dijon. A beautiful route from Dijon to Beaune is via the D947. The first part is along a zone commercial, but after that, you pass through famous wine villages such as Vougeot, Vosne Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges.
In Beaune, visit the former hospital for poor people ” Hôtel Dieu
When it comes to wine tasting, there is plenty of choice in the many wineries and wine cellars.

Auxerre, capital of the department of Yonne.

The river of the same name crosses the city. It is possible to take a boat trip here. A beautiful city walk has been set out. You will pass the Abbey Saint Germain and the Cathedral Saint Etienne. Exhibitions are regularly organised in the abbey.

Vézelay,

From far away, you can already see the Basilica of Sainte Maria Magdalene on the hill. This hill is also known as”la colline éternelle” the eternal hill.
Vézelay is on the Unesco World Heritage List and is one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Nature in Burgundy

The landscape and nature is very varied. The regional park the Morvan is located in all four departments of the Burgundy.
There are many reservoirs, of which Lac des Settons and Lac de Pannecière are the best known.
On the Lac des Settons, many types of water sports can be practised. Pedalos, renting a boat, supping.
On the many beaches, you can sunbathe and cool down in the lake.

You can also take a boat trip. Walkers can enjoy themselves and walk around the lake.  There are restaurants at various places by the lake.

Less well known to the general public is the Saute de Gouloux. At the waterfall’s gurgling waterfall, you can take a walk, picnic and splash around in the water.

Chatillon sur Seine

At the bottom of the steep cliff is the source of the Douix.
Since the time of the Celts, this place has been worshipped. Many finds have been made, which can be seen in the museum of Chatillon.
The water was also thought to have healing powers.
The river Seine is fed by the water from this source.
The park near this source is also a nice place to have a picnic.

Lac de Pont Bourgogne

Lac de Pont

A little closer to home, and then I am talking about our cottage Fermette en France, is the reservoir Lac de Pont.
Just past Semur-en-Auxois is a reservoir where it is also lovely to stay.
You can walk around the lake, or swim, hire a pedalo or a whisper boat.

 

Merry-sur-Yonne

Make the 60 metre climb and enjoy the beautiful view. From the parking place along the Canal de Nivernais you can follow the path upwards.
If you are a climber, you can climb up the rock walls.
It is also possible to make a walk uphill.
Nice picnic spot at the bridge before you enter Merry-sur-Yonne.

Culturally, there is a lot to see and do. Too much to mention, in fact. I will start with some tips in the Côte d’Or department.

Abdij de Fontenay

The Abbey of Fontenay

The abbey is located in a beautiful valley. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The abbey was founded in 1118 by St. Bernard.
It is also the start or end point of the pilgrim route Abbaye de Fontenay-Vezelay.

Le Grand Forges de Buffon

Le grand Forge was built in 1768 by naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon. The large forge can be visited.
